Prepare Your Roof Top Tent For Camping This Season

March 01, 2021

We all have the best intentions, but it’s easy to forget to thoroughly clean and dry your tent when you pack it away for the winter.

Here’s how to prepare for another fantastic camping season!

Canvas Cleaning

If you find any mold or mildew:

  • Use a clean, dry cloth to brush off any surface mold and mildew
  • Clean the fabric, preferably with a mildew cleaner intended for canvas tents
  • Rinse the fabric by cleaning with a slightly damp cloth
  • Let the tent air out and dry in the sun

Mattress

We hope you removed your mattress before storing your tent but if you forgot, follow the same steps for mold reduction and cleaning.

Zipper Care

Zippers accumulate all sorts of dust and debris, especially cover zippers. Save yourself from a sticky situation later by cleaning your zippers ahead of time.

  • Use a clean cloth or a brush to clear away any dirt or dust.
  • Lightly and thoroughly, lubricate your zippers. Wipe off any excess fluid.
  • Test the zipper by running it back and forth a few times. If it feels like to isn’t catching properly, use a small pair of long-nosed pliers to very gently squeeze the zipper slider, with the pliers squeezing from the inside and outside of the zipper.

Waterproofing

If you’ve had your tent for a while and have noticed that it’s becoming less water resistant, spray it thoroughly with a good-quality fabric or weather guard .

Ladder Care

Clean your ladder thoroughly, paying particular attention to the slides so the ladder extends and contracts easily. If it still feels sticky, you can also use a lubricant on the slides.

Nuts and Bolts

Check all your nuts and bolts to make sure they are tight. Pay particular attention to the rails that run along the underside of the tent. The bolt that’s on the floor underneath the mattress is what attaches your tent to your vehicle. It’s crucial that it’s tight and secure!
