As the days get shorter and the Pacific storms start rolling in, many Vancouver Islanders are tucking their camping gear away for the winter. If you’re not planning a little cold-weather adventure this year, it’s time to give your roof top tent some love before it hibernates for the season.
A few hours of prep now will help your tent last longer, stay mold-free, and be ready to pop open when spring arrives. Here’s how to do it right.
Before you even think about folding it up, give your tent a good clean. Salt spray, dirt, pine needles, and condensation are part of every Vancouver Island trip, and they can do real damage over time.
Vacuum and shake out any debris inside.
Wipe down the fabric with a mild soap and water solution. Avoid harsh detergents that can damage waterproof coatings.
Rinse and dry completely. This is crucial, even a little trapped moisture can lead to mildew over the damp winter months.
If you’ve been on the west coast side (hello, Tofino sand!), pay extra attention to zippers and hinges, a quick rinse will help prevent corrosion.
While everything’s open and accessible, check the seams, ladder, mounting hardware, and gas struts for any issues. Tighten loose bolts and note anything that needs repair before next season. Catching small problems now means fewer surprises next spring when adventure calls.
Vancouver Island winters are famously wet, so patience here pays off. After cleaning, let the tent dry for at least 24–48 hours in a covered, well-ventilated space, like a carport or garage.
Don’t rush this step, moisture is the enemy of canvas, vinyl, and any metal fittings.
If possible, remove your roof top tent from your vehicle and store it indoors. This reduces exposure to UV light, rain, and fluctuating temperatures.
Use a protective cover (most RTTs come with one) and make sure it’s snug but breathable.
Keep it off the ground to prevent condensation buildup.
If you have to store it outside, park under cover and make sure it’s sealed tightly against the elements.
Mice and insects sometimes see stored camping gear as the perfect winter hideout. To keep them out:
Avoid food smells by ensuring the tent is crumb-free before storing.
Pack away your bedding, annex, and ladder separately, and make sure they’re dry, too. Wash sleeping bags and store them loosely to maintain loft. Check your annex or awning poles for rust, and apply a light coat of lubricant if needed.
Come March or April, when the island starts blooming again, you’ll be ready to reinstall and hit the road knowing your setup is in top shape. A little care now means more carefree nights under the stars later. If you find maintenance or repairs needed on your tent, reach out to us and we can book you in for a tune up.
Your roof top tent is an investment in adventure, whether that’s along the beaches of Ucluelet or in the forests near Strathcona. Taking the time to pack it away properly ensures it lasts for many seasons to come.
